Sarela Colunche, Organic Peru - 12oz (340gr)
This is our first offering from the Amazonas region of Peru. The coffee is medium bodied, not too bright, and with a little spice and sweetness throughout the cup.
We are excited by the potential of continuing to work with this farm and this cooperative though as they seem to be practicing sustainable and regenerative agricultural methods. Their coffee will likely just continue to improve in quality as the earth becomes more vital through organic and biodynamic agriculture practices. You can read more of the farmer bio below.
High up in the Luya district of Amazonas, a densely forested region growing some truly exceptional coffee, Ocumal cooperative (Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Ocumal) is home to 150 members as of 2019. Founded in 2016 and run by current president Faimer Villar Muñoz and general manager Pepe Luis Huaman Reynoso, Ocumal started with the goal of working organizationally to improve quality and access financially sustainable markets to help the community thrive. The lot we have here was grown by Sarela Colunche.
Sarela was born on May 20th, 1950 in the coffee producing province of Luya. Like so many other coffee producers, she inherited her family’s farm. Passed down through generations, Sarela uses ancestral coffee sowing and pruning techniques that involve the phases of the moon. The harvest season in the community Collonce is between August and September. The farm’s size is two hectares and sits near a sector that provides fresh spring water to the surrounding habitat. Guava, Chamizo, Morrero and other native trees pepper the scenery and provide shade for the harvestable understory. Sarela has plans to reinvest back into her farm this year, improving the wet beneficiary, rebuilding the drying beds, and improving wastewater treatment. Providing quality coffee is her top focus.
