Intro

Fika Coffee is a roaster retailer located in Lutsen Minnesota. It’s here in Lutsen where we operate all three segments of the business, those being Cafe, Wholesale and Online Sales. Fika is a rapidly growing company in which there may be opportunities to apply for other positions as they come available.

Job Overview 

The job of the barista is two fold. First it’s hospitality. This is done by welcoming our guests into the cafe with friendly conversation, a generous disposition and by being attentive. Second it is the baristia’s service, the preparation of beverages for our guests. In order to provide great service the barista must be attentive and consistent to the protocols and expectations laid out in the training and manuals. Baristas will be expected to work at minimum 3 shifts a week and each shift is 5-6 hours long.

Tasks include:

  1. Prepare and serve coffee and drinks that meet Fika standards
  2. Properly handle, maintain and clean all equipment and cafe space.
  3. Serve customers as a guest in our space
  4. Consistently execute responsibilities as outlined in Fika Coffee policies and procedures 
  5. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of Fika Coffee’s story, current menu offerings (drinks & beans) and it’s mission and values.  


Tasks In Detail:

  •  Prepare and serve coffee and drinks that meet Fika standards
    Consistency is the key for our drink preparation and service. To consistently provide a “good” coffee beverage rather than provide a “great” coffee one day and then just an “ok” cup the next. Fika has worked hard and continues to create systems that produce consistency and the tools that help with that. 
  • Properly handle, maintain and clean all equipment and cafe space
    In order to be efficient with our work, to create consistency and tasteful beverages and to graciously welcome guests into our cafe our equipment and space needs to be thoroughly maintained and cleaned. Even when things look clean...we clean! Additionally we consistently practice preventive maintenance on all our equipment. In doing this we can ensure that we have a clean and functional place and equipment to offer hospitality and produce Fika standard beverages.
  • Serve customers as a guest in our home
    Whether we are welcoming a stranger into the cafe or a returning customer, it will be done from a position of hospitality, that is to welcome the stranger into our home and to extend love through our work. In order to do this a barista should carry a matured self awareness and the ability to be attentive to the customer and to your fellow staff members.  
  • Consistently execute responsibilities as outlined in Fika Coffee policies and procedures
    As a staff member you will be tasked with upholding both current and subsequent standards, policies, and procedures related to the operation of an excellent coffee shop. 
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of Fika Coffee’s story, current menu offerings (drinks & beans) and it’s mission & values
    This is the “why” of Fika, a barista should be curious to the story of Fika and how it got to where it is today. It’s within this curiosity that one will ask questions, seek answers and grow in understanding of Fika Coffee and their role.

Accountability Structure: 

The barista  is a member of the Fika Coffee staff  and will work with each of their peers to give and receive necessary information and insight to help enrich each expression of Fika Coffee. Baristas are accountable to their co-workers and directly accountable to the Cafe Manager and Owner. 

Compensation 

  • $13/hour plus tips (avg. $5/hr)
  • 5 week post hire follow up
  • Free drip and espresso 24/7
  • One free menu drink per shift
  • One free bag of coffee a month
  • 40% off drinks when not working

About Fika

Fika is a seasonal business meaning we have a huge swing in business whether it’s the cafe, online or wholesale. In the summer time we may have 4-5 full time employees and 3 part time employees, while in the winter months it drops to 2 full time and 2-4 part time. 

One of the primary goals of Fika Coffee is to continue to grow the roasting side of the business and the amount of coffee we sell online and ship down Highway 61 to wholesale accounts. We believe that creating a quality product and shipping it, will be one of the keys for Fika to be a year round business that can support a handful of employees in a meaningful way.
